Program Note:

I am very inspired by visual artists. Paul Klee in particular has had a lasting influence on my artistic outlook. I am passionate about outreach towards those less familiar with newer classical music. I also believe that, while classical music often expresses deep, abstract ideas, it is important to cherish music which primarily is fun.

As I began writing this composition for the Fontainebleau Institute, I realized I could make the material a set of gateway pieces for performers and listeners towards contemporary styles. The movements may serve as studies, focusing on gesture, ensemble unity, mixing of harmonic languages, and additive rhythm. Each piece is a Klee-like musical sketch.

Performances:

  • Daniel Dastoor, Madison Marshall, and Sabina Oprea, Château de Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau, France, July 25, 2022.
